Looking for the best straw cup for your baby? After months of testing different cups at home and daycare, these are the ones we’d actually buy again - and the few we’d skip.
Choosing the Right Baby Cup Is More Confusing Than It Should Be
When our baby turned 6 months old, one of the biggest questions I had for our pediatrician was surprisingly simple:
When do we start using a sippy cup?
Instead of recommending a traditional spouted sippy cup, our pediatrician suggested introducing a straw cup and an open cup around the same time.
That sent me down a rabbit hole.
Like most first-time parents, I started researching every cup I could find. I compared reviews, watched feeding therapist videos, searched parenting groups, and probably bought more cups than I needed.
Some became everyday essentials.
Others were used exactly once before disappearing into the back of the cabinet.
If I were starting over today, I’d buy these again without hesitation.

1. Grosmimi Spill-Proof Straw Cup (Our Overall Favorite)
Best for: Everyday use, daycare, travel, water, and milk
If I could only buy one cup again, this would be it.
We own multiple GROSMIMI Spill Proof Straw Cup cups because they’re the ones we reach for every single day. One stays at home, one goes to daycare, and another usually ends up in the diaper bag.
That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give any baby product - it quietly becomes part of your daily routine.
What we love
- Truly spill-proof (even after plenty of toddler drops)
- Extremely easy to clean
- Excellent straw flow
- Works well with both water and milk
- Available in both 6-ounce and 8-ounce sizes
- High-quality construction that still looks new after months of use
One thing worth mentioning: ours came with handles, but we never actually used them. Once our baby had developed a good grip, the handles just weren’t necessary.
If your child is already comfortable drinking through a straw, this is the cup I’d recommend before any other.
Bottom line: This is the best everyday straw cup we’ve tested.
GROSMIMI Spill Proof Straw Cup
- Truly spill-proof
- PPSU BPA-free
- Available in 6oz and 8oz
- Easy to clean
Pros: Genuinely leak-resistant, holds up to daily daycare use, excellent straw flow. Cons: Handles aren't necessary once baby has a grip. Best for: Everyday use at home, daycare, and travel.
2. Honey Bear Straw Cup (The Best Cup for Learning)
Best for: Babies learning how to drink from a straw
Before a baby can drink from a straw, they first have to understand how a straw works.
That sounds obvious now, but it wasn’t something I had really thought about.
The Legendairy Milk Honey Bear Straw Cup Silicone is designed to teach that skill, and in our experience, it works incredibly well.
Our baby had watched us drink from straws for months and clearly wanted to copy us. The Honey Bear helped bridge the gap between curiosity and actually figuring out how to suck liquid through a straw.
Once that clicked, transitioning to other straw cups became much easier.
What we love
- Makes learning straws much easier
- Soft silicone straw
- Easy to gently squeeze if your baby needs help understanding the concept
- Can continue using it after they’ve mastered straw drinking
Things to know
It’s more expensive than you’d expect for such a simple cup.
Even so, I’d buy it again in a heartbeat because it made learning feel much less frustrating.
Bottom line: If you’re introducing a straw for the first time, start here.
Legendairy Milk Honey Bear Straw Cup Silicone
- Soft silicone straw
- Squeezable body to teach the concept
- Leak-proof lid
- Food-grade BPA-free
Pros: Genuinely teaches straw drinking, soft straw is comfortable for babies. Cons: Pricier than it looks. Best for: Babies who haven't figured out how to drink from a straw yet.
3. Olababy Silicone Training Cup (The Perfect First Everyday Straw Cup)
Best for: Babies just starting with straw cups
After our baby understood how to drink from a straw, this became our next favorite.
Our pediatrician actually mentioned Olababy Silicone Training Cup with Straw Lid as one of their preferred beginner cups, which gave me even more confidence in trying it.
I love how soft and lightweight it feels.
Unlike many training cups, it doesn’t feel bulky or intimidating for little hands.
What we love
- Soft food-grade silicone
- Comfortable for babies to hold
- Stable, weighted bottom
- Gentle silicone straw
- Excellent first everyday cup
Things to know
This is not spill-proof.
That’s intentional - it keeps the design simple for learning - but it also means it’s probably not the cup you’ll want rolling around your car or diaper bag.
Bottom line: One of the best beginner straw cups we’ve used.
Olababy Silicone Training Cup with Straw Lid
- Soft food-grade silicone
- Weighted stable bottom
- Gentle silicone straw
- Lightweight for little hands
Pros: Soft, lightweight, pediatrician-recommended, comfortable for small hands. Cons: Not spill-proof. Best for: Babies who've learned the straw concept and are ready for an everyday cup.
4. Comotomo Toddler Tumbler (Our Favorite for What’s Next)
Best for: Older babies and toddlers
We started using the Comotomo Toddler Tumbler after our baby had become more confident drinking independently.
There are a lot of things I really like about this cup.
First, it’s insulated, which is great for longer outings and daycare.
Second, the build quality feels excellent, which is something I’ve come to expect from Comotomo products.
The only reason this isn’t our everyday favorite is because I think we introduced it a little early.
The flip-top straw takes a bit more coordination than the GROSMIMI Spill Proof Straw Cup , so I think it’ll become even better as our toddler gets older.
What we love
- Insulated stainless-steel design
- Great quality
- Excellent for water on the go
- Keeps drinks cooler longer
Things to know
If your baby is brand new to straw cups, I’d probably wait a little before introducing this one.
Bottom line: A great next-step cup once straw drinking is well established.
Comotomo Toddler Tumbler
- Insulated stainless steel
- Flip-top straw lid
- 8oz capacity
- Great for toddlers on the go
Pros: Insulated, excellent build quality, keeps drinks cold longer. Cons: Flip-top takes more coordination - better for older babies. Best for: Toddlers who have straw drinking well established.
5. SAMiGO Open Cups (Because Open Cups Matter Too)
Although this article focuses on straw cups, I wanted to include one open cup because our pediatrician recommended practicing with both.
These tiny silicone cups are about the size of a shot glass and are perfect for small practice sessions.
I’ll be honest - they’re messier than straw cups.
But that’s part of the learning process.
We don’t use them every day anymore, but they’re still something I want to keep practicing as our toddler gets older.
I’ll be writing a full guide dedicated to open cups because I think they deserve their own conversation.
SAMiGO Silicone Baby Open Cups
- Shot glass size
- Soft silicone
- Perfect for small sips
- Baby led weaning friendly
Pros: Right size for practice sips, soft and safe, easy to clean. Cons: Messy by design - that's the point. Best for: Introducing open cup drinking alongside straw cup practice.
Cups We Tried That Didn’t Make the List
Not every product is a winner.
One cup we wouldn’t purchase again is the original Lalo Little Cup Silicone Straw Cup .
I loved the concept - a soft silicone cup with a straw - but the straw came out far too easily. Our baby figured that out almost immediately, which usually meant more cleaning than drinking.
That said, Lalo has since released a stainless steel version that looks promising. I haven’t tested it yet, so I can’t recommend it one way or the other, but it’s definitely on my list to try.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are straw cups better than sippy cups?
Many pediatricians and feeding specialists now recommend introducing straw cups and open cups instead of traditional hard-spout sippy cups. That doesn’t mean traditional sippy cups are “bad,” but straw cups encourage a more mature drinking pattern and are becoming the more common recommendation.
When should babies start using a straw cup?
We introduced one after our baby’s 6-month pediatrician appointment, alongside solids and small amounts of water. Every child develops at their own pace, so it’s always a good idea to ask your pediatrician what they recommend for your family.
Which straw cup is best for daycare?
For us, the clear winner has been the GROSMIMI Spill Proof Straw Cup . It’s leak-resistant, easy to clean, durable, and holds up well to daily use.
Is the Honey Bear worth it?
Yes. If your baby doesn’t yet understand how to drink through a straw, it’s one of the few products that genuinely teaches the skill instead of expecting babies to figure it out on their own.
Final Thoughts
If I were building our collection from scratch today, I’d buy them in this order:
Legendairy Milk Honey Bear Straw Cup Silicone to teach straw drinking.
Olababy Silicone Training Cup with Straw Lid as the first everyday straw cup.
GROSMIMI Spill Proof Straw Cup once straw drinking is established - it remains our overall favorite.
Comotomo Toddler Tumbler as a fantastic insulated option for toddlers.
Every baby is different, and what works for one family may not work for another. But after months of testing these cups through meals, daycare, car rides, and plenty of trial and error, these are the ones that earned a permanent place in our kitchen.
